Painting, Abstract, Acrylic, Oil
My business name is phatlizzardart.
Why phatlizzardart?
I have some great memories growing up in a large raucous family in South Africa. We all had nicknames, mine was Phat Phillie. My husband and children call me Lizzard and so I put the 2 names together: phatlizzard.
My artistic journey began in Cape Town. For 15 years I was a professional ceramic artist, making, firing and hand painting both functional and decorative ware.
In 1997 we moved to Canada and I now live in Waterloo, Ontario.
About 10 years ago I was drawn back into the arts and after many months of experimenting with different mediums, I fell in love with abstract and acrylics. I often can’t explain what I’ve painted or why: I just know I love the process of creating, the freedom to do what I want without justifying the reason, leaving interpretation open to the viewer. It's a journey that could go in any direction and the outcome is mostly unpredictable.
Painting with acrylics is a joy, the colors are scrumptious and they’re extremely versatile. I love that I can scratch, make marks, create dribbles, layer, create transparency or over-paint.
My artwork is influenced by my past life, using brilliant tones of saturated color that reflect the heat of Africa as well as colors that reflect the softer hues of the ever changing Atlantic.
