Aboriginal Artists in Quebec

The heart of Canadian culture, Canadian aboriginal art is varied from the Haida of the west coast to the Inuit of the North. These aboriginal artists work in traditional and contemporary art forms such as soapstone, woodcarving, mask making, weaving, leather and painting.

WEBSITE

Andrew George is a Montreal based artist who currently resides in the Northern village of Kuujjuaq. Andrew investigates the ideologies behind recycled or found objects; turning everyday mundane items into exciting works of art. Influenced by world travels and local surroundings, this Concordia University Art History Major has infused found or recycled materials into unique works with themes ranging from religion, nature, politics, pop culture, and even death. Andrew’s native heritage has also influenced his work on a large scale, by creating traditional works with a contemporary twist he attempts to bring native issues and ideologies into modern-day works like “Broken Identity.” In this work Andrew blurs the lines that divide cultures by using the universal colour of blood. An immense sense of uncertainty where one begins and the other ends is present in this work and acts as a reminder that we are all bleed the same colour making us equal or human. Most recently Andrew has created a series of stone sculptures which are hand carved and polished depicting some endangered animals including the Blue Whale and the mighty Polar Bear. Using objects found on his adventures on the northern tundra such as Caribou antlers, black bear bones, falcon feathers, and even Walrus Ivory Andrew has created unique and rare pieces which can be viewed on his website dreamcatchercreations.ca. On his 2011 visit to China he brought a total of 140 lb. of stone sculpture created by various artists from Nunavik including two of his sculptures “Free Flight,” which will be displayed in the Canadian Embassy and “Sleeping Polar Bear” to be displayed at the c-Na gallery located in the famous 798 art district. His wide range of experiences has helped develop his passion for life, he loves to create and promote art and culture. He has developed art projects for street youth, created educational exhibits at museums, and represented the native community as a cultural delegate traveling to Mexico. He has also participated in a Language exchange traveling to various countries in Europe expanding his understandings of different cultures. Andrew sings tenor for the Concordia University Choir while having played percussion instruments for over 20 years; most notably he toured Europe with the Stouffville District Senior Orchestra. This and so much more has shaped Andrew into the artist he is today. His works have been displayed at multiple shows and has earned international recognition; a long stride away from his Nexus solo debut. Now Andrew is focused on developing relationships between different cultures and sharing experiences so he can learn, grow and improve his artistic expression.
