Ode to Ophelia: back view (2011)

This piece was created for 'Bodies of Water', the 2011 Runway Show held in conjunction with Confluence, 2011 International Surface Design Conference in Minneapolis, MN. The theme for the conference was 'Confluence: when cultures and ideas flow together, our art and our world are transformed'. This dress was inspired by Gertrude's words from Hamlet Act IV, Scene 7:
'...but long it could not be
Till that her garments, heavy with their drink,
Pull'd the poor wretch from her melodious lay
To muddy death.'
I saw 'Ode To Ophelia' as marking the 'confluence' between life and death. Alas this piece was not accepted for the runway show but I do have another letter for my rejection letter dress!
