Joan Bailey – All of my life I have been driven by the love of strong, bold colour and rich texture. I endeavor to entice with rich images that rise off the canvas, reaching out to the viewer with the unexpected. I believe in any means to get the right effect and freely mix acrylics with inks, collage, oil pencils or spray paint. My art is a tactile expression exploding in colour. My artistic education has been self-directed including countless hours happily experimenting in my studio. I began painting in watercolours but moved to acrylics early in my career, while focusing on colour and texture. Sometimes applied thickly and at times poured thinly, my paintings are impressionist, abstract or representational. I paint with my hands, paint scrapers and palette knives, and very large brushes. I enjoy using big, bold strokes of colour in surprising combinations. In the spring of 2012, my artist/partner and I realized a dream of opening an art gallery in beautiful Bayfield, Ontario called Patina Studios & Gallery where we show our own work but also represent other artists from around Ontario. We work hard to promote and support the arts in our community by working live on the street (he is a potter) each weekend in the summer to give our visitors an “art in the making” experience. We moved back to Ontario from Calgary, Alberta to open our gallery. I was represented by four art galleries in Alberta – in Calgary, Black Diamond, Olds and Cochrane. I also participated in several art shows each year in Alberta where I had vendor space and sold my own work. I am now represented by Peig Abbott Studios in Canmore, Alberta in addition to our gallery in Bayfield. I like to paint townscapes, people, trees, florals, barns, birds and sheep, and much more. I paint in all sizes from 6x6 inches to 5x5 feet.
