ZENTANGLE DRAWING CLASSES IN SASKATOON
I'm now offering Zentangle drawing classes! Zentangle is an enchanting and simple method for creating beautiful images using repetitive patterns. No art experience or 'talent' is necessary. (Really!) Contact me if you or your group would like to learn.
CERTIFIED ZENTANGLE TEACHER
I attended a Zentangle teacher training seminar in Massachusetts in May and am now a certified Zentangle teacher. There are only four of us in Canada, and I'm willing to travel (but not TOO far!).
SANDFLY GALLERY, Medicine Hat AB
I now have both mandalas and zentangle-inspired works at this contemporary gallery and gift shop. It's located at 519 2nd Street SE, above the lovely Prickly Pear Cafe.
Exhibition at the STM GALLERY, in Saskatoon SK (Canada)
Over 25% of the works were sold, there is interest in a few others, and a commission may be in the offing for the fall. I exhibited many of the zentangle inspired drawings I've been doing lately, as well as some mandalas, and some zentangle mandalas! See some of the pieces in my Zentangle portfolio, here.

HERSTORY 2010
My painting 'Around Saskatchewan' is featured on the cover of the 2010 edition of the well-known Herstory women's agenda book from Coteau Books in Regina SK. You can see the painting below.
I have always loved detail. International or universal imagery has always been of greater interest to me than local or regional subject matter. I have always been attracted to designs and images from other cultures.
In my artwork, I pursue these interests through mandalas and zentangles:
MANDALAS
Years ago I noticed that I occasionally chose a circular format for my artwork. I became interested in the mandala form and decided to focus on it for a while and see where it led. I've been investigating and creating mandalas ever since.
The mandala is a image that suits me well due to life-long interests in other cultures and spirituality, and a more recent interest in symbolism. THE CIRCLE has been a symbol, throughout history and across cultures, of eternity, wholeness, protection, and unity. THE MANDALA has the additional symbolism of balance, transformation, and interconnection. Mandala forms are found both in nature and of human design. They are often in relation to spiritually-oriented sites or activities. Think of Gothic stained-glass rose windows, domed mosques, Tibetan sand paintings and North American aboriginal medicine wheels.
I draw on sources from around the globe and explore many visual elements that interest me such as color, detail, and geometry (the only math I really enjoy!). When I create a mandala I am also alluding to the interconnection of everything in creation and my belief in the oneness of the human family.

ZENTANGLE (R)
Zentangle is an easy to learn method of creating beautiful images from repetitive patterns. It is a fascinating new art form developed by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas. It's fun and relaxing and increases focus and creativity. Zentangle is enjoyed by a wide range of skills and ages and is used in many fields of interest. It involves the intricate detail that I love.
I have recently posted some images here, in a new gallery called Zentangle Inspired Art. More to come! I have begun incorporating colored pencil, collage, and other elements into the works.

Sometimes my artwork focuses on
LANDSCAPES and BUILDINGS
Houses and buildings (pagodas, onion domes, fishing huts, outhouses, tents, and more) often find their way into my artwork. They are frequently a bit wonky and fun. Sometimes they find themselves in a mandala, sometimes in a zentangle. The masterpiece of an earlier series of pen-and-ink buildings and cityscapes, 'Moments of Place' - a very large piece for pen-and-ink - is available as a reproduction. You can see it below. Trees are also a recurring theme.
BELOW you can see 'Around Saskatchewan' created for a local land surveyer and featured on the COVER OF THE 2010 'HERSTORY' agenda book.
