Iris Shields was born and raised in Northern Ontario. As a young girl, Iris’s parents saw her talent and encouraged her by supplying art materials. She spent hours drawing and painting just for the fun of it. When Iris was 13 she sold her first portrait which gave her the encouragement to drive on. Iris and her twin sister Irene entered many competitions and won numerous awards at an amateur level.

In the past 25 years Iris has trained under well known Canadian artists, Robert Carmichael (the designer of the Looney), David Wright (Realist in Toronto) and International artist Yuqi Wang (Professor of Tianjin Academy of Fine Art in China) and many more.

The influence of the old Flemish Masters is very evident in her work. The techniques used by the old Flemish Masters are not taught in regular Community Colleges and Universities, as a result intense personal studying and training has enabled Iris to perform at a high level of mastery. Self-training and motivation is of great importance to her success. With a loving husband and four children supporting Iris’s busy life style she continues to produce amazing results in her paintings and drawings.

In 2003 and 2004 all her efforts were recognized, Iris received Honourable Mentions from the Portrait Society of Canada during the International Portrait Arts Festival competition held in Toronto.
