Call for Illustrators
HighWater Press, in conjunction with the University of Winnipeg’s Six Seasons Project, requires an illustrator for the second book in the Six Seasons series, Amo’s Sapowhtawan, with potential for four additional books.

The Six Seasons of the Asiniskaw Ithiniwak is a series of historical picture books about the Rocky Cree of North Central Canada, set during the period of the mid-1600s. Like the first book, Pisim Finds her Miskinaw, stories are supplemented by language, culture, geographical and historical notes about the Rocky Cree.

The illustrator we are looking for will
- Be able to work in a realistic, representational style
- Be able to work in watercolour
- Be able/willing to work with historical researchers to create historically accurate representations of culture

Additional assets would be
- Familiarity/experience with children’s book illustration
- Familiarity/experience with Indigenous culture
- Ability to create images digitally

Scope of the project
- The illustrator would be responsible for producing 23 large full-colour illustrations for a 10” x 12” picture book. This would involve consulting with publishers to determine size and format for each drawing, then consulting with project researchers for content and generating rough drawings for review. Once review is complete, artist will incorporate changes and complete colour art. Time period for completion, from roughs, through review, to final art, would be approximately six months.
