ZENTANGLE DRAWING CLASSES in Saskatoon and beyond
Zentangle is an enchanting and simple method for creating beautiful images using repetitive patterns. No art experience or talent is necessary. (Really!) It's easy to learn, fun, relaxing and is enjoyed by a wide range of skills and ages.
In May 2010 I became a Certified Zentangle Teacher. There are only a handful in Canada, and I'm willing to travel. In Saskatoon, I schedule classes at public libraries, the Refinery and elsewhere, and am happy to come to your group or give a private lesson.
Contact me if you or your group would like to learn. You'll have fun!
You can learn more about Zentangle at www.zentangle.com
(The Zentangle® art form was created by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas and is a registered trademark.)

I have always loved detail and patterns, sparkle and whimsy. International or universal imagery has always been of greater interest to me than local or regional subject matter. I have always been attracted to designs and images from other cultures.

In my artwork, I pursue these interests through mandalas and zentangle-inspired artwork:

ZENTANGLE®
I discovered Zentangle in early 2009 and we immediately clicked. It involves the intricate detail, repeated images or patterns, and the graphic qualities of drawing that I love. A true Zentangle is black ink on a 3.5'x3.5' white paper 'tile' and is non-representational. However, many who fall in love with it, including myself, take it further and do larger pieces, use color, etc.. These extrapolations of the original form have come to be called Zentangle Inspired Art (ZIA for short).

Some of my work is posted here in the Zentangle Inspired Art portfolio. The colored work is usually done in colored ink and colored pencil. As with the mandalas, I sometimes incorporate collage, tiny gems and other elements.

MANDALAS
Years ago I noticed that I occasionally chose a circular format for my artwork. I became interested in the mandala form and decided to focus on it for a while and see where it led. I'm still going!

The mandala is a image that suits me well due to life-long interests in other cultures and spirituality, and a more recent interest in symbolism. THE CIRCLE has been a symbol, throughout history and across cultures, of eternity, wholeness, protection, and unity. A MANDALA has the additional symbolism of balance, transformation, and interconnection. Mandala forms are found both in nature and of human design. They are often in relation to spiritually-oriented sites or activities. Think of Gothic stained-glass rose windows, domed mosques, Tibetan sand paintings and North American aboriginal medicine wheels.

I draw on sources from around the globe and explore many visual elements that interest me such as color, detail, and geometry (the only math I really enjoy!). When I create a mandala I am also alluding to the interconnection of everything in creation and my belief in the oneness of the human family.

'There is, at the surface, infinite variety of things; at the center there is simplicity and unity of cause.' --Ralph Waldo Emerson

Sometimes my artwork focuses on
LANDSCAPES and BUILDINGS
Houses and buildings often find their way into my artwork. They are usually a bit wonky and fun. Sometimes they find themselves in a mandala, sometimes in a zentangle. The masterpiece of an earlier series of pen-and-ink buildings and cityscapes, 'Moments of Place' - a very large piece for pen-and-ink - is available as a reproduction. You can see it below. Trees are another recurring theme.
