Artist’s Statement

As an artist, I believe that in the creative process, there is a measure of letting go that must occur to fully experience the creative energy, which is spiritual. The creative process involved in painting is my reward; noticing at once the intricate details hidden within a close-up observation and how time is suddenly lost within the moment, the discovery of an unplanned relationship within the details of my work, and the forms and patterns that emerge in a beautiful and spontaneous way. Within the action of creating, I am suddenly guided by my subject who instructs me and eventually creates itself; the true essence of its creation residing in a range of emotions, from feelings of joy, excitement, and awe to a sense of being lost or irritated. In the end, my paintings are generated through a power from within; they are a visual metaphor that expresses my “inside” out. My work involves capturing the essence of a moment, and bringing out the extraordinary from the ordinary. As such, my brush strokes are destined to reveal the visual beauty, uniqueness, and eloquence I see in all things and the rich hued surface of each piece is always obtained through the application of many thin layers of paint. Regardless of the variety between the topics or series I produce, the individuality of my brush strokes and richly hued surface prevails and is the connection between each one of my paintings and myself.
