Jack McClelland, president of the Roloff Beny Foundation, announced that the Roloff Beny Book Award for excellence in photography book publishing will now be presented on a biennial basis, with the next award being presented in May 2002, for the 2000-2001 calendar years.
The third award will be announced Wednesday, May 15, 2002, in the Roloff Beny Gallery at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto.
Admissions for the third award must be submitted by the deadline of December 31, 2001. The photographer must be a Canadian citizen and the book must be available for sale in Canadian bookstores.
The jury consists of internationally acclaimed book producer, Lorraine Monk, as Chair of the three member jury. She will be joined by award winning photographer, Steve Simon, a photojournalism professor at Loyalist College in Belleville, and lithographer Hendrik Rens, head of production at Herzig Somerville Ltd.
The first award in 1999 was given to Larry Towell of Shetland, Ontario, for his book, El Salvador, Published by W.W. Norton/DoubleTake Books; the second award in 2000, was given to Art Perry of Vancouver, B.C., for his book, The Tibetans, Published by Viking Studio/Penguin Putnam, New York.
The original $50,000 award was created with the aim of encouraging excellence in photographic publishing, with $20,000 to a commercial publisher, and $30,000 to the photographer. The award was established in memory of the late Roloff Beny, a world famous photographer, who was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta. The second award was increased to $60,000, giving $5,000 to each of the two honourable mentions.

Date of publication must be between January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2001. Entries must be made no later than December 31, 2001. Books submitted after the deadline will not be eligible.
To qualify for submission, the photographer or photographers must be Canadian citizens and may live anywhere in the world. The book may be manufactured and/or published worldwide, and it must be available in Canadian bookstores.
A prize of $50,000 will be awarded to the photographer of the book of photographs published between the above dates. The photographer will receive $30,000 and the publisher, $20,000. If the book is a collection, $10,000 of the photographers' share will be awarded to the photo editor. Two honourable mentions will receive $5,000 each.
A current biography and photograph of the photographer must accompany each book submitted along with the name of the publisher and/or if the it is self published.
